Recommended Extensions I install on every site I do

PDF | Print | E-mail
  • LazyBackup:  this “plugin” will make a backup of your Joomla site’s database once a day (or more often if you wish) and will e-mail it to the email address of your choice.  I have an online email account that I use just to receive these backups, and it gets 100 emails a day … of my site backups.  It is truly a set-it and forget-it type of solution.   Get it here:   www.lazybackup.net
  • Akeeba Backup:  Akeeba Backup is a very versitile Joomla plugin that makes it easy to make t total backup of your site ... all of the Joomla files, extensions, images, and the database.  It dramatically simplifies the process of moving a Joomla site from one server to another, and I use it a lot.  The free version does most things very well, and the "Pro" version adds a lot of additional features for site security, including backing up your site to "the cloud" or to another server.  http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/site-security/backup/1606
  • Show CPanel:  this little module adds an icon to the top of your administrator control panel … right next to the drop down menus.  It makes it very easy to do a “one click to the control panel” … rather than using Site –> Control Panel.  It’s a small thing, but since you do it a lot, it’s a handy thing.  Get it here: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/administration/admin-navigation/8003
  • JCE: The Joomla Content Editor is a replacement text editor for Joomla.  It add a lot of very nice features, including a very nice “insert image” tool (which lets you upload images on the fly very easily), and a very nice linker that lets you link to articles, menu items, etc.   The free version is very, very good, for for about US$ 20 you get some additional advanced tools.   http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/edition/editors/88
  • Extplorer:  This administrative component adds an FTP program right into your Joomla admin.  Very handy when you need to do something quick: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/file-management/2630
  • Joomla Update Manager:  this component makes updating your Joomla installation to the latest version a matter of just a few clicks.  It’s really that easy!  Note: it does have problems on GoDaddy’s servers due to their unusually Joomla file permissions.  http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/core-enhancements/installers/9332
  • Advanced Module Manager:  this gem adds a lot of abilities to the module manager, especially when determining when to make a module show or not show.  By default, Joomla allows you to turn modules on and off based on the menus only.  This adds the ability to do this by component, article category or section.   Install this now!  You will think nice thoughts about me and the author of this every day! http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/modules-management/10307
  • Place Here Module:  This module lets you put an article in a module position (and has several other options as well).  This makes it easy to put things that you would normally put into a custom html module into the article manager, making it easier for Joomla new users to edit these items.  http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/news-display/content-embed/498
