I remember my first encounter with Mambo / Joomla
Although I look back over the past few years as I learned
more and more about Joomla, and I can still remember clearly the first time I
ever saw Mambo.
I was looking for some type of easy to use Content Management
System for some websites I wanted to do for some departments of my
organization. I ended up looking at Mambo (this was shortly before the launch
of the Joomla project). I was on a demo
site (one that lets you make changes, and then the server resets each hour) and
I was creating articles, moving modules, etc., and I thought, "I've got to get
this."
It was intimidating, though, because I did not have much
experience with a system like this.
Well, that's not totally true. I
had (and still do) have a phpBB forum on one of my websites where I do tech
support for some software that I wrote.
But, in that case, I just followed the step-by-step instructions to
install it and did not really understand what was going on behind the scenes.
But, when I saw Mambo (and a month or so later, Joomla), I
just knew that I wanted to understand the "why" behind the system, not just the
"how." I felt (and I am convinced that I
am right), that if I understood the "why," I would be much more able to do the
"how."
